My most perfect weapon

This is a Smith & Wesson Model 19 Combat Special revolver in 357 Mag. I bought this sometime in the mid-1970's and have thousands of rounds through it, mostly 38 Special. I haven't shot it in a while but just took it outside and ran 100 rounds through it. I was amazed at the accuracy.

This pistol does what it is supposed to do better than any other weapon that I have. The action is glass slick. The trigger is a light and crisp delight even to someone used to custom triggers costing more than I originally paid for this piece. The feel of the pistol in my hand is right on a very basic level. Occasionally something is made that transcends. Classic--

I'll never part with this.

I have a 6" model 28 highway patrolman (N frame) that I feel almost the same way about. An old one, pinned barrel, recessed cylinder.

I've become partial to my 1911's, but I know what you mean.

I totally concur ... I always want a reminder ...
... but aside from that I'd just like to add that, having owned a .44 magnum revolver, I feel anything over a .357 equivalent is indeed excessive for a defensive (non-big game) hand gun...
... and futhermore if i mean to KILL something well, a good target-grade .357 mag such as the Smith would be a dream come true. I just am too well stocked up on guns for now... it's a recession ya know.

I remember when I pondered buying one of these for about $350 Federal Reserve Notes and I have forever regretted letting it pass me by... a 6" blue steel Colt Python, a "PERFECT" dream date of mine, the Smith's sister maybe, one I'll likely never get to own.

Ahh, how true.

But when what you are facing are one or more that are without mind, without soul, without intellect, I'll take the 19.

Sweet gun.

Yup...

Either one of those would make a great back-up!

Tom D, your piece is 'seasoned' and even custom pistols can't match the precision of your gun.

WHY ?

Well, you know this, but for others it's the perfect 'mating' and wear of the metal components over time that produce that 'glass' slick, silky-smooth roller bearing trigger action you're describing.

New pistols don't have it.......and lots of money cannot duplicate it.

It's like an antique violin or a vintage bottle of wine - perfection or at least close to it takes 'time' and lots of it.

THanks for sharing ~ sometimes the simplest experiences are our most treasured moments in life.

I love the model 28. My dad has one and I've been looking for one....shit stout revolver....it is the same as the big model 29 44 Mag....but in 357. I do not think S&W ever built a stronger 357.

TomD, I have the twin to that gun. Mine's a 19-3 that was made in 1970. I've only owned it for about 3 years, and I haven't put thousands of rounds through it, but I've shot it enough to know I love how it shoots.

Great pic and story TomD. Got me to thinking about my first handgun, a S&W Model 13 chrome plated. The trigger pull in single action is very sensitive and the fixed iron sights are dead on.

Here's my weapon.

Here's my gun.

One's for shooting and one's for fun.

Learned that in basic training.:signs14::getdown:

Sometimes the planets just line up perfectly. I have a S&W model 686 .357 that describes just like Tom's revolver, and is from the mid '70's.I bought it from the Ottawa county sheriffs dept used when they switched to 9mm pistols. The gun is incredable to shoot, the only improvement I did to it was add full wrap around Crimson Trace lasergrips.
Then my wife unit took it and I havent seen it since!:bawling:
